Santa Clara County, south of San Francisco Bay, was once home to some of California’s most celebrated wine-industry pioneers, including Charles Lefranc and Paul Masson. Before the technological revolution began in the 1960s, the county hosted a dynamic wine industry. Ever since, however, vineyard space has given way to the space industry, and acreage under vine now totals less than 2,000 acres. The county has four AVAs, with only the San Ysidro District fully within its borders. The most important AVAs are Santa Clara Valley and Santa Cruz Mountains. The fourth AVA, Pacheco Pass, has only one winery, which rarely receives the attention of the others. While it’s unlikely that the county will ever again host a large wine industry, its important place in viticultural history can never be erased.
