Nova Scotia (Provincial Appellation)

The Untangling of Nova Scotia’s Viticultural Tale

Authors Chris Naugler, Bruce Wright, and Robert Murray release their new book, 'The Tangled Vine, Winegrowing in Nova Scotia'

by Adam Dial
June 2, 2004

The release of the much anticipated new book, The Tangled Vine, Winegrowing in Nova Scotia, was well timed as part of the events for the second Atlantic Canada Wine Symposium, held in Wolfville this past May.

The book represents a substantial amount of research on the part of its three authors, Doctors Chris Naugler and Bruce Wright, and Robert Murray, retired Berry Crop Specialist for the Nova Scotia Department of Agriculture. All three authors were on hand to talk about the new work and sign books for the many conference delegates who took a copy home home.

The 140 page publication is a thorough account of the history and the future of viticulture in Nova Scotia, with references to every significant person and their achievements since the first vines were planted by the early French explorers and colonists in the early 1600’s. With a comprehensive breakdown of each of the distinct winegrowing regions of the province, this book serves well as a guide for anyone keen to tour and discover the vinous treasures of Nova Scotia, as well as for those inspired to join the growing ranks of Nova Scotian vignerons, following the lead of the pioneers who have laid the groundwork for a world class wine region in Eastern Canada.
