Breggo Cellars
2006 Gewürztraminer(Anderson Valley)
There are not enough Gewurztraminers produced in Anderson Valley to draw any stylistic conclusions about the grape in the region, and this new, early-release bottling will not clarify anything. But it should help win new fans to the variety because it’s a fascinating expression of the grape. The fruit source, by the way, is the same Ferrington Vineyard behind some of Anderson Valley’s highest-priced, most-sought-after Pinot Noirs.
Aromatically, the wine is subdued and elegant but with Gewurztraminer’s undeniably heady perfume of roses, lychees and nut oils. It’s when you sip that the wine multiplies into amazing dimensions, particularly some you might expect to find in a red wine but not a white: cinnamon, golden raisin, nutmeg, and olive paste. The wine actually benefits from being exposed to air for a while, so I would chill it down to refrigerator temperature and then let it warm up during the aperitif hour or dinner.
