2006 Sauvignon Blanc, Ferrington Vineyard(Anderson Valley)
There’s not a lot of Sauvignon Blanc grown in Anderson Valley, but what there is turns out to be quite good. Perhaps that’s because the terroir – including the people who farm the land – is Ferrington Vineyard. The SB vines here are fairly old, because the former owners didn’t “know” they were supposed to concentrate on Alsatian white grapes in Anderson Valley, and because the new owner, Kurt Schoenemann, didn’t have the heart to rip out some of his most stately vines. We are the benefactors.
Everything you want in Sauvignon Blanc is here fruit-wise, including apples, melons, and pineapples. The wine was partially barrel-fermented, so it has weight, viscosity, and oak dimensions that harmonize well with the fruit. It’s also softer and more alcoholic than most California SB, so try not to quaff it too quickly on a warm afternoon
